When Hermes' own Jean-Louis Dumas sat down next to Jane Birkin on a flight he had no idea he was about to create history. When Jane Birkin discussed her need for a sizeable (yet chic) weekender, Dumas immediately got to work designing the perfect bag for her needs, and in 1984 we were introduced to the Birkin, which would quickly become the most coveted bag in history thanks (in part) to the 48 hours it takes to hand-assemble this exquisite piece as well as the extensive waitlist you'll need to join to purchase one from stores. This authentic Gold Birkin 40 is rendered in Fjord leather and accented with gold-plated hardware. Fjord leather is textured, velvet-soft, matte leather with a highly visible grain made from adult bull leather that is naturally scratch-resistant (even more so than Togo or Clemence) and is even water-resistant. Includes lock, two keys and clochette.
